10 Essential Tips To Rock Your Curls

by Curlup Team |

Hey you girls with curls! Have you ever envied your friends with their perfect straight hair? Well, at least some of you must have gawked and felt a pang of jealousy deep down. With the amount of time and effort that you invest in maintaining your hair, it is quite natural for you to feel that way. But, what if we say that you can effortlessly (well okay, maybe a little bit of effort) maintain those luscious curls that others may look at grudgingly? Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Okay, all you have to do is follow the below mentioned tips!

1. DO NOT wash your hair daily!

What makes curly hair different from other types of hair? While the curly hair strands tend to be under-moisturized because of its shape and texture; the scalp on the other hand can be very oily. The scalp generally produces natural oil and sebum to keep the hair soft and protected. When you cleanse your hair on a daily basis, it washes off this natural oil making your hair frizzier. Hence, the best thing to do is to wash your hair once every two or three days.

2. You may have to follow Pre-shampoo routine

Many girls with curly locks swear by the pre-shampoo routine. It is exactly as the name suggests; a step performed prior to shampooing your hair. This step helps in softening, conditioning and detangling your hair and it also prevents the exasperating roughness and damage that comes with using harsh cleansers. Apply a conditioning oil onto your scalp and give a thorough massage.

3. Watch out the ingredients in your shampoo

SLS, Parabens and Silicones! Ring a bell? Well, these are the most harmful ingredients that could take the life out of your hair. But that isn’t the worst part; most of the mainstream shampoo brands use these ingredients in abundance. These are the same chemicals that are used in detergents as well. So, you might have to avoid these shampoos for the sake of your curls. The key idea is to use products specifically made for curly hair, which are Sulfate, Paraben and Silicone free.

4. Conditioning is a must!

Angry curls are no fun to be around! All they do is fluster you in public. Hence, it is imperative to replenish moisture into your curls. Conditioning your hair after washing it is a way to do it.

An important point to be noted here is that shampoos are for the scalp and Conditioners are for the hair strands. Your scalp produces sebum to seal in the moisture in your hair. However, this oil does not make it to the ends of your hair. Hence you should focus on applying the conditioner on the length of the hair rather than the scalp. CONDITIONING should be your prime mantra! Make sure you do not wash off all of the conditioner

The Curl hydrating conditioner formulated by curl up made specifically for curly hair consists of ultra-nourishing properties of Argan Oil, Chia seeds and Flax seeds. This hence holds those bouncy locks in place.

5. Style your hair when it's dripping wet

Styling wet hair aids in preventing frizz. All you have to do is apply the curly Hair products while your hair is soaking wet. This will help to seal in the moisture and rejuvenate your curls.

Curl up’s curl defining cream is infused with Argan oil, Flax seeds and Shea Butter which has properties to scuffle off damage and revitalise your succulent curls.

6. You may want to trade your towel with T-shirt

Did you know regular terry towels are your worst enemy? Terry towels are made of harsh fibres which absorb all the moisture from your hair leaving it frizzy and dry. Don’t think twice, just drop your terry towel right away and switch to a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel instead. The softness of a T-shirt or microfiber towel will aid in smoothening up your curls and preventing them from tangling.

7. Avoid heat

Heating equals to dehydration! Hence heat styling can take out all the moisture out from your hair making it rough and dry. If you are a person who cannot survive without heat styling, make sure that you use the best styling products to prevent damage.

8.Throw out your BRUSH!

Did you know that brushing your curly hair when it’s dry makes it frizzier? Instead of a brush, opt for finger combing or wide-toothed combs to detangle your hair only when it’s wet. Even better would be to detangle your hair in the shower before rinsing off the conditioner!

9. Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning is an inevitable path to healthy hair. It lets the moisture seep into your hair making your curls look dreamy. All you have to do is apply a deep conditioner to your hair. Do not forget to focus on the ends. Applying a deep conditioner to your ends will restore oils, preventing breakage and split ends. After applying the conditioner wrap your hair with a shower cap and add low heat. This will open up the cuticles letting the conditioner to penetrate into your hair. Leave in the conditioner for 20-30 minutes and wash it off using cold water. This method will help replenish moisture in your hair and fight off the damage.

10. Switch to Silk/Satin pillow case

Cotton pillow case absorbs all the moisture out from the hair making it frizzy. Using a silk/satin pillowcase or even a bonnet while sleeping can control the hair breakage and other damages to an extent.

It’s time for you to slay now! Say bye to rough-tough and frizzy hair once and for all!
